Recap of Illuminating Innovation 2024

Illuminating Innovation 2024: A Tour of Canada’s Photonics Hub was an extraordinary gathering of leaders, innovators, and researchers in Canadian photonics, co-organized by Photons Canada and the National Research Council (NRC), in Ottawa on November 21, 2024. This unique event provided attendees with firsthand insight into Canada’s world-class photonics research and development capabilities.

The event opened with a welcome from Velko Tzolov, Director General of the the Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC), followed by an insightful presentation from Photons Canada’s Chair Marie-Christine Ferland, who discussed current trends in the Canadian photonics industry in Canada, alongside future challenges and opportunities. Attendees heard from Reza Dowlatshahi, Director Research and Development of CPFC, and Christophe Py, Director of Research and Development for Advanced Electronic and Photonics of Quantum & Nanotechnologies (QN) Research Centre, who highlighted the comprehensive range of services offered through the NRC centres.

Following the presentations, attendees were guided through the various labs of CPFC and QN by NRC experts, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the state-of-the-art equipment and cleanrooms and learning about the advanced fabrication processes and testing capabilities available to researchers and industry partners. The day concluded with a lively networking reception, fostering connections among photonics researchers, industry professionals, and government representatives.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the team at the NRC, the speakers and attendees. Thank you for making this event a success!
